Tribune Intrigue

Where have we seen this movie before?

As rumors swirl about a possible Sinclair Broadcast Group/Tribune Media merger, there are new reports that 21st Century Fox and Nexstar may be circling for their own piece of the action.

The drama is reminiscent of last year’s attempted merger of Media General and Meredith – which failed and was replaced by a Nexstar takeover of Media General.

In any case, employees of Fox 61 and WCCT in Connecticut must be watching closely. The two stations are owned by Tribune Media.

And Now…The News From South Bend

Can you hear us now?

This week Sinclair began broadcasting the news for Toledo, Ohio from South Bend, Indiana – about two and a half hours away.

Under this model, which could be a sign of things to come in medium and small markets, the news is gathered locally, but presented by anchors in a studio somewhere out of town reducing the budget for anchors in various cities.

The same South Bend team presents the news for viewers in the Scranton/Wilkes Barre, Pennsylvania market. Sinclair recently expressed interest in a merger with Tribune Media which owns Fox 61 and WCCT in Connecticut.

Tribune Station Sales

unknown

While rumors circulate about a possible Sinclair and Tribune Media merger, one analysis says it is more likely Tribune Media would sell off some of its TV stations, but resist a full sale of all its assets.

Tribune Media owns Fox 61 and WCCT in Connecticut.

Sinclair Interested in Tribune TV

unknown

According to several reports, Sinclair Broadcast Group has approached Tribune Media about a merger.

Such a deal would combine two of the largest broadcast groups in the country and would need regulatory approval. It is also likely such a combination would require the sale of some stations.

Tribune Media owns Fox 61 and WCCT in Connecticut.

Word on the Street

unknown

There are rumors in the air that Tribune Media, owner of Fox 61 and WCCT in Connecticut, might be the target of a buyout offer in the near future.

Some reports suggest Sinclair and Meredith might be interested in the Tribune TV station group, but the most credible report comes from Crain’s Chicago Business which says a New York hedge fund with a history of takeovers has purchased a 6.6% stake in Tribune Media.

As we reported earlier this month, Tribune CEO Peter Liguori is scheduled to step down next month.

Oxton Acting GM

UnknownFollow up now on a story you (may have) read first on The Laurel.

Mark Oxton, the director of sales at Fox CT and WCCT-TV/CW, has been named acting general manager. He takes over after the announcement earlier this week that Chris Geiger stepped down from the GM position after nine months.

Tribune Broadcasting says Oxton will hold the position until permanent GM is chosen.
