Jane Mills, a freelance journalist based in New Haven, claims the New Haven police department was favoring certain reporters by giving them press releases while refusing to send them to others. NHPD claimed in emails that she was on the list to receive the regular police blotter sent by the department to members of the press via email, explaining that the reason she wasn’t receiving them was because they aren’t sent out everyday. However,a colleague of Mills sent her the recent releases, including one for the very day NHPD had claimed there were none. Mills says that once she confronted NHPD with copies of the press releases the department began sending her the press releases the next day. Mills says the problem began in the fall, during the police investigation of a homicide at Yale University and took several months to resolve.
