Patrick Soon-Shiong, Nant Capital.
Tribune Publishing sold a 12.9% stake in the company to Nant Capital in an effort to strengthen its defenses against a buyout offer from Gannett.
The move gives Merrick Media and Nant a combined 27% share of the company making it more difficult for Gannett to get the votes it needs to takeover.
Tribune owns the Hartford Courant, Los Angeles Times, Chicago Tribune and Baltimore Sun. Gannett has a pending offer to buy Tribune for $864 million or $15 a share.
