“Fran Schneidau, NewsRadio 880” is a sign-off that has been emanating throughout this state for 33 years.  Fran covers Connecticut and Westchester for the all-powerful WCBS NewsRadio 880 out of New York. Thursday evening she was in Rocky Hill for a taping of  WFSB’s interview program “Face the State” and from what Dennis House writes, Fran was greeted like a rock star.

  1. Duby,
Thanks for making Fran feel comfortable about coming on. She really is a classy lady and told me her family hosted a “Face the State” brunch so they and her friends could all watch together!

  2. As part of the Voices of Experience Tour, Vicki Schieber, the mother of a young woman who was raped and murdered, will share her unique perspective on the death penalty in Wilton at Dina’s Restaurant October 5th at 7:00pm.

In 1998, Schieber’s 23 year-old daughter Shannon was raped and murdered during her first year at the University of Pennsylvania. The crime made headlines and the district attorney sought the death penalty as a way to honor the victim.

The Schieber family, however, deeply disagreed with prosecutors’ desire for the death penalty and had to fight them to avoid the additional pain of a capital trial and subsequent appeals. Shannon’s murderer finally was caught in 2002 and is serving multiple life sentences.

Mrs. Schieber will be speaking at a time of heightened awareness of the death penalty issue in Connecticut. Several high profile capital cases are ongoing, while at the same time many are calling for the Connecticut’s death penalty to be repealed.

According to Mrs. Schieber, the death penalty fails to serve victims’ families. “One tragedy of the death penalty is that it turns society’s perspective away from the victim.”

Since Shannon’s death, Mrs. Schieber actively has worked across the country to end the death penalty. She currently serves as the Education Coordinator for the Catholic Mobilizing Network to End the Use of the Death Penalty and is Chair of Murder Victims’ Families for Human Rights’ Board of Directors.

Schieber’s story has been featured in the Washington Post and Philadelphia Inquirer, and in 2008 she was a member of the Maryland Commission on Capital Punishment.
