Several reports suggest a deal between Gannett and Tronc(formerly Tribune Publishing) could happen as soon as today.
Gannett has been negotiating to buy Tronc, which owns the Hartford Courant, for several months. The original offer was harshly rejected by Tronc which has continued to implement its own growth plan in the meantime.
There was a time when many Courant journalists would scoff at Gannett as being on the low end of the news food chain, but now some see a Gannett buyout of their parent as a positive move in the right direction. In either case, both companies have been putting heavy emphasis on the use of video as a way to grow their audiences.
