Former Hartford Courant reporter and columnist Helen Ubinas is a recipient of the Vernon Jarrett Medal for Journalistic Excellence administered by Morgan State University’s School of Global Journalism & Communication.
She won the award for her series on teens and gun violence which was prompted by the shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Florida. Winners of this award must be nominated by someone directly affected by the journalism.
Ubinas now writes for the Philadelphia Inquirer and Daily News.
