As expected, the board of Chicago Public Media(WBEZ) has approved the acquisition of the Chicago Sun-Times newspaper. The deal is expected to be made final at the end of the month.
Once complete, the merger will create the largest regional non-profit news gathering organization in the country.
More importantly, it may set the stage for similar mergers in markets where local public media outlets are looking to expand and local newspapers are clinging to life.
