WBUR, one of Boston’s two public radio stations, is facing financial difficulties that could lead to layoffs and other cuts.
In a dramatic fundraising letter to WBUR supporters, CEO Margaret Low explains how the growth of social media advertising is draining financial support for WBUR and advertising dollars for the news industry as a whole.
“This is a different story than we’ve told before. It’s unlike our usual on-air fundraising appeals. The stark reality is this — in order to survive, we need the people who count on us every day to dig deeper than they ever have before. We must rely more heavily on our members now.”*
