The details are not yet known, but the decision by Audacy to lease broadcast rights for 880 on the AM dial to ESPN New York means there will soon be only one all-news station in New York City. It’s a development many people have seen coming for a long time. The switch is planned for August 26. The decision means almost the entire staff will be subject to layoff, but given the nature of personnel matters those details will likely trickle out over the coming weeks.
We do know that WCBS is and has been the broadcast home of many journalists with Connecticut roots or professional connections. One of the highest profile is Paul Murnane who worked at WELI in New Haven and WKSS in Hartford before joining WCBS about two decades ago. As a morning anchor, it’s possible the company might find a role for him at 1010 WINS.
