The Avon planning and zoning commission rejected WFSB-TV’s proposal to put a Doppler weather radar system on Avon mountain in a 6-1 vote. The commission has rejected the radar because it would be “out of character” with the town and would pose potential health risks to the surrounding residents. A consultant hired independently by the residents claims that the radar will emit harmful radiation to those living around the radar. WFSB officials and a consultant for the town of Avon insist that there is no risk associated with the radar system. Another point of contention between residents and WFSB is the noise from the proposed system.
WFSB planned to install the radar on 375 Deercliff Road and it would replace the radar system that is currently at Bradley International Airport.
