As important as it is for everyone to know how top Trump administration officials mishandled secret war planning information is to watch what happens next.
Nearly 48 hours after Atlantic editor in chief Jeffrey Goldberg was included on a Signal text chain by mistake, President Trump claimed Monday afternoon that he knew nothing about it when questioned by the press. That seems unlikely since it is the job of the seventeen other people on the text to keep the president informed.
A few hours later in Hawaii, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth attacked Goldberg and the Atlantic instead of addressing his role in the affair. To call both responses less than honest is polite.
And now what happens? Congressional investigations? An FBI investigation? Inspector General? Probably not, because even though what happened is a violation of the law, under the Trump administration the law is on Trump’s side, so to speak. But the press will keep digging. We predict more to come.
