WNPR vs. WTIC

In recent months a clear trend is developing in local radio news.

WNPR is beating WTIC-AM in the ratings for news/talk listeners. A Hartford Business Journal story this week details some of the reasons. The biggest are the decline of AM radio listeners overall, the shriveling of WTIC’s news team over the last 20 years and the decision by WNPR several years ago to commit fully to an all talk format.

Before deregulation in the radio industry, nearly every AM station and several FM stations in Connecticut had full news staffs or morning anchors who spent at least half of their day on the street reporting.
