Bob, who served as a reporter and editor for the Rep-Am for more than four decades, is “locked in” — almost completely paralyzed by a stroke he suffered in April 2006. (His situation is similar to that of the editor depicted in the book and film, “The Diving Bell and The Butterfly.”)
Bob made news earlier this year by participating in a brain research project that was detailed in the journal Nature and the Republican-American in May. You can find links to the stories we published, as well as additional information about Bob, on his website at www.bobveillette.com.
The road race and walk are now in their seventh year. Also, for the third straight year, running legend Bill Rodgers will attend. He greets the runners, signs autographs, runs in our race and then helps hand out the trophies and prizes.
The Bob5K will be held once again on Sunday, Sept. 9, based in Library Park in downtown Waterbury (across from the Superior Courthouse). The event, which is run by newspaper staff and Bob’s family and friends, has raised more than $105,000 in its first six years. It is the largest annual fundraiser for the Veillette family, who use the money to defray medical costs and improve Bob’s quality of life.
